Finding Gems
I decided to start looking through all my lovely Fringe notes books, (as a stationary diva, those notebooks are seriously the best) only to find that I have a ton! And most of them have been completely written in. (Go me!) So I started looking through pretty much every page of like 7 of them, (I'm still working through the others) and started creating a table of contents for them so that I can find outlines, or refer back to story ideas I once had. And in many of them I have full on handwritten content for books that need to be published. Then I had so many ideas that truly blew my mind. Not to toot my own horn, but in all honesty I thought to myself, "Wow that is truly brilliant, I have to get on this." For multiple things.
All of this to say, I'm going to start journaling again. Julia Cameron states that everyone should do morning pages which is a creative brain dump of three pages every morning. I notice, that when I'm hand writing, a ton of ideas come to me. I've found so many lovely gems that I'm going to type up now!
But I must be very clear in my point of all of this. Moral of this post is: So many of us don't spend time handwriting stuff. I'm guilty of it to lately. I used to hand write everything, even my notes, and now...not so much. You get so much more out of handwriting. (Especially if you're writing down goals because it's subconsciously holding you more accountable by seeing it in your own handwriting! It's some awesome psychological thing!) So join me in journaling, or morning creative stream of consciousness. If you don't want to journal, start writing what you're thankful for.
One of the many things I loved about Greenlights by the fantastic Matthew Mcconaughey was that he journaled. He said he journaled to be able to reflect on life when it was good, and if he ever fell off course he could see what he was doing before and change his ways. I've never been much of a journal-er but it is something I've always wanted to dedicate time to. (Especially considering that now, I want to write a book about my early 20s and I really have to spend time thinking because not every memory is coming easy!)
Think about incorporating some journaling or rather self reflection into your practice. Or write about how you're feeling to let it out. Try it! What do you have to lose? Plus... you might like it!
Find what works for you. I did, and I forgot about it, so now I'm circling back and incorporating it into my day again. I'll share my results and findings soon!
