Book: Husbands & Lovers

My thoughts on the book Husbands & Lovers by Beatriz Williams.

You know that feeling when you start a book and you just can't put it down? When you're trying to do other stuff, work, sleep, etc but you just crave it? That's how I feel about Husbands & Lovers. I've been loving how the author weaves two storylines that don't seem all that appealing to me when reading the back of the book. But it works! Expertly and elegantly. Of course, there is one storyline I like more, but both stories, which take place years and continents apart, captivate me. I'd read both of them as separate books.

The characterization of the cast in this book feels real, relatable, and I feel as though I know them. I'm already attached. The twists, the way the author gives us conflict where we'd least expect it. The cliffhangers are gold. It's a very good book. Definitely one of my favorite books of the year, out of the 16 that I've read. I absolutely adore this book.

I also don't love reading book reviews-- that's actually not true, I love reading book reviews. But I notice that more often than not, they lead me astray. So I don't listen to negative reviews--anymore. It's all subjective, and also, this is my life, writing, stories, reading. And I'm more critical of books than the average person because of my background. The last little thing I'll say to end this rant is that... books will affect you differently based on where you are in your life.

(This might be too woo woo for some but... here goes!) I'll pick up a book by the way it calls me. I read a few negative reviews on this book and I wouldn't pick it up, even though I felt like I wanted to read it. Once I picked it up, I thought, I am never listening to a book review again. Especially since the last book I read, everyone was raving about and I enjoyed it, but it wasn't one I'd recommend. I feel like if I'm supposed to read that book at that time, it'll resonate, or I'll feel called to it. I also do not finish books I don't like. When I try to force it, I notice I get stuck in a reading lull. It's okay to save books for whenever the time is right!

Anyway, I hope you love Husbands & Lovers as much as I do.
